Inspired by last week’s blog post, a friend has challenged me to think about all the ways I can compare myself to a half of a head of cabbage in the crisper. In an effort to cultivate light-heartedness (one of my intentions for the year), here we go!
So, what does my life have in common with a half head of cabbage?
- Well, there’s the obvious: mid-life, mid-cabbage.
- Cabbage doesn’t try to be anything it’s not. That’s not my schtick either.
- We’re both a little gray and soft around the edges.
- Cabbage keeps going and going...you cut off a hunk, enough for a dinner’s worth of side salad, and there’s still more! For better or worse, I’ve got a little of that keep going and going in me, too.
- My college roommate described me as crunchy, so there’s that.
- We can both go along for the ride without taking over.
- Some might say boring. I say, “Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it.”
- Dependable, steadfast and always there when you need me.
- The cabbage never yells out, “Pick me, pick me! I’ll knock your socks off!” That’s more of a baby bok choy thing.
- Versatile and easy-going:
| Meat - sure! Vegan - no problem! Winter - great! Summer - let’s do this! |
- If any vegetable is an old soul, it’s my dear cabbage - the same goes for yours truly.
- I’m not sure I perk up a party the way purple cabbage can perk up a green salad...but I’ll be working on that once parties are a thing again.
Perhaps the French term of endearment “mon petit chou” (literally, my little cabbage) will make more sense to you now. I do hope you’ll never look at that half head of cabbage in your fridge quite the same.
Play along! What item in the fridge can you relate to today??
