Rebooting

I spent last week nearly glued to my phone - watching for election updates and texting with various friends about how it was all playing out.

This week, I can’t seem to focus on a single task. Sitting down at my desk and then forgetting what I’m supposed to be working on. Or getting up - only to walk around in circles not sure why I got up at all.

I guess it is my brain coming off of the technology overload. My main coping strategy last week was reaching out to others to talk details, refreshing the NYT election page every ten minutes, getting lost in the granular details to help me stay detached from the big picture.

Not sure I would recommend this strategy, for the record.

I feel myself lurching around today. It is beautiful out, and yet I haven’t gotten out for a hike. I have a list of to-dos sitting next to my computer and they seem to blur on the page. I find myself refreshing my email for a notification fix.

I keep inviting myself back with a deep breath. It helps - for about twenty seconds - and then my mind seems to bolt, like a dog just let off leash on his favorite trail. I am trying to just notice and not judge.

And so I begin again: deep breath into the body.

What does this body need?

And then the answer is clear - fresh air and sunshine.

Time to get out and move, and help my detoxing brain reconnect with the rest of me - the parts that haven’t forgotten how to be alive in the world.

A recipe for rebooting: oxygen and vitamin D.

How do you know when you've had too much of something? What helps you come back to center? What does a system reboot look like for you?
